Youtube Picture in Picture (PiP) mode was earlier available only to the users who purchased the YouTube Red subscription but YouTube has now made the PiP feature available for free to all the users in the United States.

PiP mode allows you to keep the Youtube video running in a small window on top of any app allowing you to continue watching the YouTube video while surfing the web or when you are chatting with friends. You can also drag the window on any part of the screen. This is one small interesting feature and if you want to enable this feature, here is a small guide on how to do it if you are outside the United States.

How to use the YouTube PiP mode if you are outside the United States?

To enable the PiP mode outside the United States, you will need a VPN app to connect to a US-based server and make sure that your phone is running on Android 8.0 Oreo and above. All Nokia phones are running on Android Oreo so it should not be a problem for most Nokia smartphone owners. However, Nokia 1 and Nokia 2 devices won't support the PiP feature as they are Android Go devices.

  • Download the VPN app and connect to a US Server. We are using VPN Lighter.
  • Once connected to the US Server, just open the YouTube app and play any video of your choice.
  • Now tap the home button to enter the PiP mode. Now, your video will keep playing in a small window which you can move around and keep it open above any apps.
